How to Prepare Your Home for a Professional House Cleaning
Booking a house cleaning is the easy part. A few minutes of prep before the team arrives means they spend their time actually cleaning, not stepping around piles or waiting at the gate. Here's how to get your South Florida home ready, and what you don't need to bother with.
Should You Clean Before the Cleaners Come?
No. You're hiring professionals so you don't have to scrub. The goal is to tidy, not to clean. Cleaners can only clean the surfaces they can reach. A counter covered in mail, a floor covered in toys, or a bathroom vanity crowded with bottles gets cleaned around instead of cleaned. Picking up clutter first lets the team put their time into the work you're paying for.
The Day Before: A Quick Prep Checklist
Pick Up the Clutter
- Clothes, shoes, toys, and bags off the floors and furniture
- Mail, papers, and chargers off counters, desks, and tables
- Toiletries off the bathroom counter or grouped in one spot
- Dishes in the dishwasher, or ask ahead whether dishes are part of your service
- Pool towels and beach gear off the floor and hung up to dry
Put Away Valuables and Private Items
- Jewelry, cash, and watches
- Medications and important documents
- Fragile heirlooms or anything you'd rather nobody move
This isn't about trust. It simply means nobody has to work around something precious, and nothing gets misplaced.
Make a Short Priority List
Tell the team what matters most for this visit, like the guest bathroom before family arrives or the kitchen before a party. Also flag any surfaces that need special care. Many South Florida homes have marble or travertine, and acidic cleaners (including vinegar) can etch natural stone. If you have stone counters, hardwood, or a manufacturer-recommended floor cleaner, say so.
Plan Access, Parking, and Building Rules
In South Florida, getting in the door is often the trickiest part of a cleaning appointment. Sort it out the day before:
- Condo buildings: let the front desk or concierge know a cleaning team is coming, add them to the guest list, and ask whether vendors need to check in or use a service elevator
- Gated communities: call the gate, or add the team in your community's visitor app, so they aren't stuck at the entrance
- Parking: point out a guest spot or driveway space, and mention any towing or permit rules
- Entry: if you won't be home, share lockbox, smart lock, or alarm instructions ahead of time
Pets, Kids, and Working From Home
- Let the team know about pets in advance. Anxious dogs or escape-artist cats are often happiest in a closed room or crate, and you can tell the team which room to skip
- Pick up pet toys and any pet messes so they don't get in the way
- It's fine to be home. Staying out of the room being cleaned helps things move faster
- Working from home? Tell the team which room to clean first, or which one to leave alone during your calls
Set Up Your Home for a Smooth Clean
- Keep the AC on. In Miami humidity, mopped floors dry faster and the home stays comfortable for everyone
- Leave fresh sheets out if you'd like beds made with clean linens, and ask ahead whether that's included
- Leave out any special products you want used on a specific surface
- Note anything broken or damaged before the visit, like a loose cabinet door or a cracked tile, so everyone knows
What You Don't Need to Do
- Pre-clean bathrooms, floors, or the kitchen
- Buy supplies. Our team brings their own supplies and equipment
- Stay home the whole time, as long as access is arranged
- Apologize for the mess. Cleaners have seen it all
Extra Prep for Move-Out and Rental Cleanings
Some cleanings need a little more planning:
- Move-out cleaning: have your belongings packed and out of the rooms if you can. Empty cabinets, closets, and the fridge make it possible to clean inside them. Make sure the power and water are still on the day of the clean. Our move-out cleaning checklist for Miami renters walks through what landlords usually look for
- Move-in cleaning: schedule it before the movers arrive, while the rooms are still empty
- Vacation rental turnovers: keep a stocked supply closet with fresh linens, towels, and guest essentials, plus clear notes on how you want the place staged
Standard Clean or Deep Clean for Your First Visit?
If your home hasn't had a professional cleaning in a while, a deep cleaning is often the best first visit. It reaches the baseboards, vents, and built-up grime that regular cleaning doesn't. After that, a recurring residential cleaning keeps things on track. Not sure which you need? Our guide to standard cleaning vs deep cleaning breaks down the difference, and our cleaning checklist shows what each service covers.
