Move-Out Cleaning Checklist for Miami Renters

Moving out of a Miami apartment or home? A detailed move-out clean is one of the best ways to protect your security deposit. Here's the room-by-room checklist our cleaners use, plus the Florida deposit rules every renter should know.

When to Start Your Move-Out Clean

Plan to clean after the last of your furniture and boxes are out. An empty home is faster to clean, and you can reach the baseboards, closet floors, and the spots behind where the couch and bed used to sit. If you're short on time, book your move-out clean for the day after your movers, before you hand in your keys.

Room-by-Room Move-Out Checklist

Kitchen

• Clean inside the fridge and freezer, including shelves, drawers, and door seals
• Clean inside the oven and the oven hood vent
• Wipe out every cabinet, drawer, and the pantry shelves
• Scrub the sink, faucet, countertops, and backsplash
• Wipe the outside of all appliances, including the dishwasher and microwave (inside and out)

Bathrooms

• Scrub the shower, tub, and tile grout
• Clean inside, outside, and around the toilet
• Wipe down and disinfect cabinets and drawers
• Polish mirrors, towel racks, and fixtures
• Mop the floor, getting into corners and behind the toilet

Bedrooms and Living Areas

• Dust ceiling fans and light fixtures and remove cobwebs
• Wipe down doors, door frames, light switches, and door knobs
• Wipe window sills, window frames, and baseboards
• Clean inside closets and dust the shelves
• Vacuum, sweep, and mop every floor

Don't Forget

• Balcony or patio, especially sand and salt residue near the beach
• Air conditioning vent covers and return grilles
• Laundry area, lint trap, and the floor behind the washer and dryer
• Wall scuffs and marks (test a small spot first)

Florida Security Deposit Rules Renters Should Know

Under Florida law (Florida Statutes section 83.49), once you move out your landlord has 15 days to return your deposit if they aren't making a claim against it. If they plan to keep any of it, they have 30 days to send you written notice by certified mail explaining why, and you then have 15 days to object in writing. Leave a forwarding address and take dated photos of every room after your clean. Those photos are your best evidence if there's a dispute.
